Maharashtra Police on Wednesday arrested Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre in connection with the alleged assault of two doctors inside a municipal hospital in Dombivli, an incident that has sparked widespread criticism and protests from the medical community.
The action came after CCTV footage of the episode circulated widely on social media. The video allegedly shows Mhatre, accompanied by several supporters, confronting doctors and physically attacking them inside the hospital premises.
According to police, the incident occurred on Monday at a civic hospital in the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) area. The confrontation reportedly began following a disagreement over the treatment of a patient. What started as a verbal argument soon escalated into violence, disrupting hospital services and creating panic among staff and patients.
Following complaints filed by the doctors, police registered a case against the corporator and others allegedly involved in the incident. After reviewing CCTV footage and recording witness statements, investigators arrested Mhatre and launched further inquiries to identify the remaining accused.
The incident triggered strong reactions from doctors’ associations, which condemned the attack and demanded strict action against those responsible. Medical professionals also called for enhanced security arrangements in government hospitals to ensure the safety of healthcare workers. While emergency services continued, several doctors staged protests to highlight concerns over increasing incidents of violence against medical staff.
The case has once again brought attention to the issue of attacks on healthcare professionals and renewed demands for stronger measures to protect doctors while they perform their duties. Police said the investigation is continuing and additional legal action will be taken based on the evidence collected.
