India’s upcoming Census 2027 will include a specific question on COVID-19 vaccination, making pandemic-related health information part of the country’s decennial population enumeration for the first time.
The Centre has notified 40 questions for the Population Enumeration phase of Census 2027. Among the questions covering demographic, social and economic information is one asking respondents about the place where they received their COVID-19 vaccination.
Why Is COVID Vaccination Being Included?
The inclusion of COVID-19 vaccination details is significant because the 2021 Census was postponed amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Census 2027 will therefore collect population information after a period that dramatically affected India’s public health system, mobility, employment and social life.
Recording the place of COVID-19 vaccination could provide policymakers with an additional data point on how vaccination services reached people across different locations.
However, the notified question is specifically about the place of vaccination. Reports on the 40-question questionnaire do not indicate that the Census is being used as a detailed medical record of an individual’s vaccination history.
What Exactly Will Be Asked?
The COVID-related question is part of a much broader 40-question schedule. The questionnaire also covers:
Religion
Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe status and caste
Education and literacy
Employment and occupation
Migration
Disability
Mother tongue and other languages
Aadhaar and voter ID details
Passport and driving licence information
Bank accounts
Mobile phone details
Place of COVID-19 vaccination
A New Public Health Data Point
The COVID-19 vaccination question stands out because conventional population censuses generally focus on demographic, housing and socio-economic characteristics. Its inclusion reflects the lasting significance of the pandemic in India’s population and public-health experience.
The data could potentially help authorities understand the geographical reach of vaccination services, although the precise uses of the vaccination information will depend on how the collected data is processed and analysed.
Census 2027 Will Be Digital
The Population Enumeration phase is part of the two-stage Census 2027 exercise. Population enumeration will begin in September 2026 in Ladakh and snow-bound areas of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, while the exercise for the rest of the country is scheduled for 2027.
The government has also provided for self-enumeration, giving citizens an option to submit information digitally before house-to-house enumeration begins.

Among the 40 questions, the COVID-19 vaccination question is likely to attract particular attention because it connects India’s largest population-counting exercise with one of the most consequential public-health events in recent history.
For millions of Indians, the vaccination drive was a major part of the pandemic response. Census 2027 will now record where people received their COVID-19 vaccination, adding a pandemic-era health-related dimension to the country’s demographic database.
