In a significant move aimed at strengthening Delhi’s healthcare system, the Delhi Government has facilitated internship placements for 275 Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) across 12 hospitals in the national capital. The initiative is expected to help eligible graduates complete their mandatory internship, paving the way for their registration as medical practitioners.
The internship allotment was carried out by the Health Department under the guidance of Health Minister Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh, addressing the long-standing issue of internship delays faced by many FMGs after clearing the mandatory screening examination.
275 Internship Seats Distributed Across Teaching and Non-Teaching Hospitals
According to the Health Department, 68 internship seats have been allotted to seven teaching hospitals, including ESIC Medical College & Hospital, ABVIMS & Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Lady Hardinge Medical College, Vardhman Mahavir Medical College & Safdarjung Hospital, Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College & Hospital, and NDMC Medical College.
The remaining 207 seats have been allocated to five non-teaching hospitals—Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, Guru Gobind Singh Hospital (Raghubir Nagar), Jaipur Golden Hospital, BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, and St. Stephen’s Hospital.
Government Focuses on Strengthening Medical Services
Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh said the government is committed to providing equal opportunities to eligible Foreign Medical Graduates while simultaneously improving healthcare delivery in Delhi.
He stated that timely internship opportunities would allow young doctors to complete their professional training and contribute to the healthcare sector without unnecessary delays. He also said that under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the Delhi Government is focused on building a skilled and future-ready medical workforce capable of meeting the city’s growing healthcare demands.
Transparent Counselling Process
The Health Department coordinated with both teaching and non-teaching hospitals to conduct a transparent counselling process and ensure fair distribution of internship seats. Officials said the exercise was designed to enable selected candidates to begin their internships without further delay.
The initiative is expected to enhance the availability of trained doctors in Delhi while strengthening medical education and improving healthcare services for residents.
