Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) and its associated Lok Nayak Hospital have achieved a significant milestone in pediatric healthcare by successfully conducting 345 pediatric Video Urodynamic Studies (VUDS), the highest number reported by any hospital in India. The achievement establishes the institution as a national leader in advanced pediatric bladder and urinary tract diagnostics.
Video Urodynamic Study is an advanced diagnostic procedure that combines bladder pressure measurements with real-time imaging to evaluate complex urinary tract disorders in children. The test plays a vital role in identifying bladder dysfunction at an early stage, enabling timely treatment and helping prevent long-term kidney damage.
The entire series of 345 pediatric VUDS procedures has been performed by Dr. Sujoy Neogi, Professor in the Department of Pediatric Surgery, since the installation of the specialized equipment in 2021. According to Dr. Neogi, developing the service required creating a structured pediatric program from the ground up, as very few centres in India had experience in conducting the procedure on such a large scale.
The Department of Pediatric Surgery is headed by Dr. Simmi Ratan, Director Professor, under whose leadership the department has emerged as a referral centre for advanced pediatric urology services. The department now receives patients from private as well as corporate hospitals seeking specialized evaluation and treatment.
Faculty members Dr. Chiranjiv, Dr. Prafull, Dr. Gaurav Saxena, Dr. Raghav Narang and Dr. Sheetal Upreti have also contributed to strengthening the department’s clinical and academic services.
Hospital officials acknowledged the dedication of Nursing Officers Victor and Bhramwati, along with Nursing Orderly Miss Preeti, whose support has been instrumental in ensuring the smooth conduct of these highly specialized procedures for children.
Building on this achievement, the department has introduced pediatric anorectal biofeedback, a non-invasive therapy designed to help children suffering from anal incontinence. The addition further expands the hospital’s advanced pediatric gastrointestinal and urological care services.
The Department of Pediatric Surgery said the accomplishment reflects the institution’s commitment to providing world-class healthcare in the public sector. Officials also credited Medical Director Dr. B.L. Chowdhary for providing the administrative support that enabled the department to establish and expand these pioneering services.
