In a significant move to improve facilities for patients and their families, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, is set to construct a 1,600-bed multi-storey Dharamshala for patients’ attendants and outstation visitors. The project will be developed under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative in partnership with a non-governmental organisation.

The proposed Dharamshala will provide affordable accommodation for attendants of admitted patients as well as people visiting AIIMS for treatment who require temporary lodging. The initiative aims to reduce the hardship faced by thousands of families who travel from different parts of the country for medical care.

As part of the project, two existing Dharamshalas on the AIIMS campus will be replaced by a modern eight-storey Dharamshala with significantly higher capacity. The number of beds is expected to increase nearly fourfold, ensuring better facilities and greater convenience for patients’ families.

AIIMS receives thousands of patients every day, with a large proportion coming from states including Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Bihar, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh. Many patients undergoing prolonged treatment are accompanied by family members who often struggle to find affordable accommodation near the hospital.

Currently, the limited number of beds in the existing Dharamshalas forces many attendants to spend nights in the open or on pavements around the hospital. The new Dharamshala is expected to provide safe, hygienic and economical accommodation while easing pressure on existing facilities.

Construction is expected to be completed within approximately two years after work begins. Once operational, the facility will become one of the largest Dharamshalas attached to a government hospital in India, offering major relief to patients and their attendants.
