In a significant boost to pediatric healthcare in the national capital, Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalaya (CNBC) is preparing to launch a dedicated cardiac surgery unit for newborns and children. Once operational, the facility will become the first government hospital in East Delhi’s Yamunapar region to perform advanced heart surgeries on newborn babies, reducing the need for referrals to other tertiary hospitals.
Hospital officials said the new cardiac surgery unit is in its final phase of development. Modern operation theatres, a Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PICU), ventilators and other specialized medical equipment are being installed. The unit is expected to begin functioning after the recruitment of expert pediatric cardiac surgeons, anesthetists, nurses and technical staff.
At present, infants born with congenital heart defects often have to be referred to hospitals such as AIIMS, Safdarjung Hospital, GB Pant Hospital or private healthcare facilities for life-saving surgeries. These referrals can delay treatment during the crucial early hours after birth. The upcoming facility at CNBC is expected to ensure faster diagnosis, immediate intervention and improved survival outcomes for critically ill newborns.
The hospital caters not only to patients from East Delhi but also receives a large number of children from neighbouring areas, including Ghaziabad, Noida, Greater Noida, Baghpat and several districts of western Uttar Pradesh. Officials believe the new unit will strengthen access to specialized pediatric cardiac care for thousands of families across the National Capital Region.
Medical experts emphasize that timely surgical intervention is critical for babies born with congenital heart disease. By offering comprehensive treatment under one roof, the hospital aims to reduce patient transfers and make advanced cardiac care more accessible to economically weaker families.
