New Delhi : HL October 6, 2026

India’s national telemedicine platform eSanjeevani has crossed the landmark of 50 crore (500 million) teleconsultations, marking a major milestone in the country’s digital healthcare journey and highlighting the growing role of technology in making medical services more accessible.

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, eSanjeevani recorded 50,00,92,730 teleconsultations across all 36 States and Union Territories as of September 15, 2026. The achievement reflects the expanding use of telemedicine to overcome geographical, financial and logistical barriers, particularly for people living in rural, remote and underserved areas.

One of the World’s Largest Public Telemedicine Networks

eSanjeevani has emerged as a major component of India’s digital health ecosystem and one of the largest telemedicine initiatives supporting primary healthcare globally.

The platform enables citizens to consult healthcare professionals remotely, reducing the need for frequent travel to healthcare facilities. It has helped extend public healthcare services beyond the physical boundaries of hospitals and clinics while bringing medical consultations closer to patients’ communities.

The platform currently supports more than 1.42 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandir spokes, 19,473 medical centres and 901 online OPDs. Its network includes approximately 2,41,923 registered healthcare providers.

eSanjeevani is available in 15 languages, including English and 14 Indian languages, helping improve accessibility for citizens across different regions of the country.

The service facilitates approximately 2.5–3 lakh consultations every day, while its highest single-day utilisation has crossed 6.30 lakh consultations.

Women and Senior Citizens Form a Major Share of Users

The usage pattern of eSanjeevani highlights its growing importance among sections of the population that may face greater challenges in accessing physical healthcare facilities.

Women account for 57.14 per cent of total eSanjeevani users, while 40.15 per cent of consultations have been availed by people aged 46 years and above.

Senior citizens aged 60 years and above account for 16.25 per cent of consultations.

The significant participation of women and older citizens demonstrates how telemedicine can make healthcare consultations more convenient while complementing existing services delivered through the public health system.

AI-Powered Clinical Decision Support Added

eSanjeevani is also evolving through the integration of emerging technologies aimed at improving the quality and efficiency of digital consultations.

One of the latest developments is the integration of an Artificial Intelligence-powered Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS). The system is designed to assist healthcare professionals during consultations and support more consistent, efficient and informed clinical decision-making.

The innovation has also received recognition under the National e-Governance Awards 2026, where it was honoured with a Gold Award.

Integration with ERSS-112 to Strengthen Emergency Healthcare

Another important development is the integration of eSanjeevani with the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS)-112.

The integration is intended to establish stronger coordination between emergency response services and remote medical expertise. It can help facilitate more coordinated access to medical assistance and strengthen the use of digital technology in emergency healthcare delivery.

The move represents an effort to connect telemedicine capabilities with emergency response infrastructure and improve the overall coordination of healthcare services.

eSanjeevani Expands into Specialist OPD Services

The platform is now moving beyond primary healthcare consultations by enabling patients to access specialist OPD consultations through leading government medical institutions.

Patient-to-doctor teleconsultation services in selected specialties have been introduced at AIIMS Jodhpur, AIIMS Jammu and AIIMS Patna.

The initiative is expected to reduce the need for patients to undertake long-distance journeys simply to consult specialists. It can also reduce waiting burdens at major healthcare institutions while improving access to specialised medical expertise.

The specialist teleconsultation network is expected to be expanded gradually to other premier government institutions, including AIIMS, JIPMER and PGIMER Chandigarh.

Connecting Primary and Specialist Healthcare

The expansion into specialist consultations represents an important next step in the evolution of eSanjeevani.

From initially facilitating consultations at the primary healthcare level, the platform is increasingly connecting different levels of care. This can help patients access appropriate medical expertise while enabling more effective utilisation of specialist capacity available within the public healthcare system.

The development could also strengthen continuity of care by creating digital links between community-level healthcare services and tertiary-care institutions.

A Made-in-India Digital Health Platform

eSanjeevani is an indigenous digital health solution developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC).

C-DAC Mohali has provided technical development and engineering support for the platform since its inception. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has played a key role in guiding the platform’s continued evolution in line with India’s changing healthcare requirements.

The platform has developed from its initial hub-and-spoke telemedicine model into a large-scale national digital health service capable of delivering hundreds of millions of consultations.

A Major Milestone for India’s Digital Health Mission

The achievement of 50 crore teleconsultations represents a significant milestone in India’s digital healthcare transformation.

With its expanding network, multilingual interface, integration of artificial intelligence, linkage with emergency response services and growing specialist OPD capabilities, eSanjeevani is becoming an important tool for expanding access to healthcare.

The platform demonstrates how indigenous digital public infrastructure can be deployed at national scale to address geographical barriers and improve healthcare accessibility.

As India continues to strengthen its digital health ecosystem, eSanjeevani’s expansion from primary consultations to specialist and technology-enabled healthcare services reflects the growing role of digital infrastructure in supporting universal health coverage and equitable access to quality healthcare.
