Harish Rana receives passive euthanasia at AIIMS

Life saving equipment was removed under the supervision of the medical board
Harish Rana breathed his last under passive euthanasia at AIIMS. Rana, who was suffering from a serious illness for nearly 13 years, was allowed to remove the life support system under medical guidelines and legal process.

According to sources, the patient’s condition was extremely serious and incurable, due to which this decision was taken with the consent of the family and as per the prescribed protocol. All necessary procedures were completed under the supervision of the medical board, after which the life support equipment was removed.

Passive euthanasia in India is permitted under strict guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court, which require the patient’s wishes, family consent and medical board approval.

This case once again brings to the fore sensitive questions related to the right to life, death with dignity and care of seriously ill patients. Experts believe that in such cases it is extremely important to maintain a balance between humanitarian approach, legal transparency and medical ethics.

The media protocol department of AIIMS Delhi has released official statement after demise of Harish Rana.
