The debate over the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) has intensified in Tamil Nadu, with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) calling for the complete abolition of the national medical entrance examination. The party has also urged that education be brought under the State List, allowing state governments to exercise greater control over educational policy and medical admissions.
TVK stated that repeated controversies surrounding NEET have raised concerns over the credibility of the examination system. According to the party, a long-term solution requires structural reforms rather than temporary administrative measures.
The party also suggested that if constitutional changes take time, an interim arrangement through a Special Concurrent List could be considered to provide states with greater authority over education until a permanent framework is established.
The demand comes as political discussions over NEET continue across the country, with several parties reiterating their positions on the examination. TVK maintained that its stand is focused on ensuring greater autonomy for states in education policy and medical admissions.
The issue has once again brought the debate over India’s education governance and the balance of powers between the Centre and the states into national focus.
