The Delhi Government has decided to initiate action against Fortis Hospital in Shalimar Bagh after a District Magistrate-led inquiry found multiple irregularities, including alleged negligence in patient care, illegal construction, fire safety deficiencies, and violations of medical protocols.
The inquiry was ordered by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta after the family of a stabbing victim complained during a public hearing at the Chief Minister Jan Seva Sadan that the hospital delayed treatment while allegedly demanding payment first. The family claimed the delay contributed to their son’s death.
Acting on the Chief Minister’s directions, a joint inspection team led by District Magistrate S.S. Parihar, along with officials from the Health Department, Municipal Corporation, Fire Department and other agencies, conducted an inspection of the hospital on Thursday.
According to officials, the inspection uncovered several violations, including misuse of building by-laws, unauthorized construction, deficiencies in fire safety systems, improper use of the basement, and serious lapses in adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) governing patient care.
The inquiry team also reviewed CCTV footage, which reportedly showed that the injured youth walked into the hospital’s emergency department on his own after sustaining stab injuries. Officials said the footage suggested that timely medical intervention could potentially have saved his life. The team also examined emergency department records as part of the investigation.
District Magistrate S.S. Parihar said a detailed inquiry report is being prepared and that appropriate action will be initiated against the hospital based on the findings.
The Delhi Government said it remains committed to ensuring accountability in healthcare institutions and taking strict action in cases where negligence endangers patients’ lives.
