NMC Adds 9,911 New MBBS Seats, Boosting Medical Education Capacity Across India

New Delhi: HL July 16, 2026

In a significant boost to medical education, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 9,911 additional MBBS seats for the 2026-27 academic session, taking the country’s total approved undergraduate medical seats to 136,939.

The expansion is expected to provide greater opportunities for students appearing in NEET UG counselling and further strengthen India’s healthcare workforce in the coming years.

According to the latest seat matrix released by the NMC, the approved seats are spread across 823 medical colleges in the country. The increase comes through a combination of newly established medical colleges and enhanced intake capacity at existing institutions.

The addition of nearly 10,000 seats reflects the continued focus on expanding medical education infrastructure to meet the growing demand for qualified healthcare professionals. Over the past few years, India has witnessed a steady rise in both the number of medical colleges and MBBS seats, aimed at improving access to medical education and addressing the doctor-to-population ratio.

Education experts believe the increased intake will offer more admission opportunities for eligible NEET candidates. However, final admissions will continue to depend on factors such as NEET rank, reservation category, state and All India quota, and the counselling process.

The expansion is also expected to benefit underserved regions by increasing the availability of trained doctors in the long term. Strengthening medical education has been a key priority as India works towards building a more robust and accessible healthcare system.

With the latest approvals, aspiring medical students will have a wider pool of seats to compete for during the upcoming admission cycle, although competition for top government medical colleges is expected to remain intense.
