Gorakhpur : HL October 31, 2026
Questions have emerged over the availability of advanced cardiac care facilities at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Gorakhpur, after its Executive Director, Major General (Retd.) Dr. Vibha Dutta, was referred to a private hospital for further cardiac evaluation following a health complication.

According to reports published on October 30 and 31, 2026, Dr. Dutta initially received treatment at the emergency department of AIIMS Gorakhpur. After her condition stabilised, she was transferred to a private hospital equipped with a catheterisation laboratory (Cath Lab) for further assessment as a precautionary measure.
Doctors evaluated whether she required a pacemaker. However, the procedure was ultimately found to be unnecessary, and she returned home the same evening. Subsequent reports indicated that her condition had stabilised.
The incident has drawn attention to the availability of specialised cardiac treatment at the institute, particularly the status of its Cath Lab, an important facility for diagnosing and treating several heart conditions.
Located in eastern Uttar Pradesh, the institute serves people from Gorakhpur and neighbouring districts, as well as patients from adjoining areas of Bihar. Its role extends beyond treating patients: AIIMS Gorakhpur is also expected to strengthen medical education, healthcare research and the availability of specialist doctors in the region.
The Union government’s original plan for AIIMS Gorakhpur specifically recognised the healthcare needs of eastern Uttar Pradesh and adjoining districts of Bihar. The proposed service area included 14 districts across four Uttar Pradesh commissionerates—Gorakhpur, Azamgarh, Basti and Devipatan—and five districts of western Bihar.
AIIMS Gorakhpur Says 70% of Cath Lab Work Completed
Following reports highlighting the non-availability of Cath Lab services, AIIMS Gorakhpur stated that approximately 70% of the work required to operationalise the facility had been completed.
The institute also indicated that the necessary medical equipment and machinery were in the process of being delivered. Efforts were underway to complete the remaining work and make the facility operational as soon as possible.
According to reports citing a senior AIIMS doctor, the Cath Lab is expected to become functional by December 2026.
The facility is expected to strengthen the institute’s capacity to provide specialised cardiac services and reduce the need for patients to travel to other hospitals for certain diagnostic and interventional procedures.
What Is a Cath Lab and Why Is It Important?
A catheterisation laboratory, commonly known as a Cath Lab, is a specialised medical facility used to investigate and treat various cardiovascular conditions.
It enables doctors to perform procedures such as coronary angiography, which helps identify blockages in the blood vessels supplying the heart, and angioplasty, which can help restore blood flow through narrowed or blocked arteries.
Depending on the patient’s condition and clinical requirements, these procedures can be essential in managing coronary artery disease and certain cardiac emergencies.
The availability of such facilities within a major public medical institution can improve access to specialised treatment, particularly for patients who face financial or logistical difficulties when travelling to other cities.
However, the benefits for patients will depend on the facility becoming operational, the availability of trained specialists and supporting medical services, and the hospital’s capacity to provide timely treatment.
Why the Development Matters for Eastern Uttar Pradesh
AIIMS Gorakhpur serves as an important tertiary healthcare institution for Gorakhpur and surrounding districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh. Patients from neighbouring regions also depend on major medical centres in the area for specialised treatment.
The availability of advanced cardiac facilities at AIIMS could help reduce the need for patients to seek certain services at hospitals in other cities.
For patients experiencing serious cardiac symptoms, timely diagnosis and access to appropriate treatment are particularly important. A fully operational Cath Lab, supported by emergency services and trained medical personnel, could strengthen the region’s cardiac care infrastructure.
The recent development has also renewed public attention on the importance of completing specialised medical facilities within the announced timelines.
AIIMS Gorakhpur: From Foundation Stone to a Major Medical Institution
AIIMS Gorakhpur was established under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), a central government initiative aimed at improving healthcare infrastructure and expanding access to advanced medical education and treatment.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the institute on July 22, 2016. Its outpatient department was inaugurated on February 24, 2019, and the full-fledged institution was inaugurated on December 7, 2021.
Since then, the institute has been an important part of efforts to strengthen tertiary healthcare services in eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Dr. Vibha Dutta, a pathologist and former senior officer of the Armed Forces Medical Services, serves as the institute’s Executive Director and CEO. She previously headed AIIMS Nagpur and has experience in medical administration, research and healthcare management.
Completing Advanced Medical Facilities Remains a Priority
The development highlights the importance of ensuring that major public healthcare institutions have fully functional specialised facilities alongside emergency departments and general medical services.
While AIIMS Gorakhpur has reported substantial progress in establishing its Cath Lab, the remaining work, delivery and installation of equipment, and commencement of services will be important milestones.
The institute’s stated target of making the facility operational by December 2026 will therefore be significant for patients awaiting access to advanced cardiac investigations and procedures.
