India is continuing to strengthen its position as a global leader in Yoga and traditional medicine through international collaborations, research initiatives and academic partnerships under the Ministry of Ayush. The government says these efforts are helping increase the worldwide acceptance of Yoga while promoting Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy across multiple countries.
The global recognition of Yoga has grown significantly since the United Nations declared 21 June as the International Day of Yoga in 2014. Building on this momentum, the Ministry of Ayush has been promoting Yoga through international events, academic exchanges, research collaborations and capacity-building programmes. Joint work with the World Health Organization (WHO), including international training standards for Yoga, has further strengthened its credibility in healthcare.
India has also expanded its international academic partnerships. In recent years, the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY) signed agreements with organizations in Mongolia and France to promote Yoga education, research and cultural exchange. These collaborations aim to develop structured academic programmes and encourage the global practice of Yoga.
To promote Ayush systems worldwide, the Ministry is implementing a dedicated international cooperation scheme that supports exports of Ayush products and services, establishes Ayush academic chairs abroad, conducts training workshops and encourages research collaborations with foreign institutions.

According to the government, India has signed 27 country-to-country agreements, 16 Ayush Chair agreements and 57 institute-level MoUs to promote Yoga and other Ayush systems globally. Every year, scholarships are also offered to foreign students to pursue Ayush courses at leading institutions in India.
Several national institutes and research councils under the Ministry of Ayush are carrying out scientific studies on Ayurveda, Homoeopathy, Yoga and Naturopathy. Research projects include studies on cancer, pneumonia, periodontal disease, anaemia and public health, while institutions are also organizing faculty development programmes, research methodology workshops and clinical training to strengthen evidence-based healthcare.
The government says these initiatives are creating new opportunities in education, research, wellness services and entrepreneurship. Expanded training programmes, fellowships and updated academic curricula are helping prepare skilled professionals for careers in integrative healthcare, while strengthening India’s traditional medicine ecosystem both nationally and internationally.
