Social activist and education reform advocate Sonam Wangchuk has ended his 26-day hunger strike after receiving assurances from the Central Government on key demands related to education reforms and examination integrity. The decision came following discussions between government representatives and protest leaders.

According to those involved in the talks, the Centre assured that peaceful protesters would not face punitive action and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the examination system through stricter measures against paper leaks and other irregularities. Protest organisers said dialogue with the government will continue on the remaining issues.

Following the end of the fast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Wangchuk and wished him a speedy recovery. The Prime Minister urged the activist to regain his health after nearly four weeks of fasting. Wangchuk acknowledged the gesture and thanked everyone who supported the movement peacefully.

Explaining his decision, Wangchuk said he chose to end the fast after receiving assurances from the government and because he wanted to ensure that the movement remained peaceful and democratic. He appealed to supporters to continue pursuing reforms through non-violent means.

Although the hunger strike has concluded, organisers said their campaign for greater transparency, accountability and reforms in the education system will continue through discussions and constitutional methods.
